A Mother Shares Her Thanks to the In-School Mentoring program...
My son has been enjoying a Big Sister through the In-School Mentoring program. At first I was a little hesitant, but was kind of at the "take what you can get" stage. I am SO glad that I decided to go ahead with a female match for my son. The following are a few reasons that having a Big Sister for a boy can be just as good (if not better than) as having a Big Brother.
With a Big Sister, my son, who has really only spent quality time with his Mom doing "girl things" has SO many more opportunities. I say this because the match is based on INTERESTS...NOT GENDER!! My son happens to love sports, which I honestly know nothing about. His Big Sister is into sports and a lot of boy stuff. As a matter of fact, I don't think there could have been a better match made! I think we have all gone through the stage in life where we "hung out" more with the opposite sex than our own. Remember the reasons??? Well, I guess when you are young, the same rule applies.
My son has grown in confidence and knowledge passed on to him through his Big Sister. They have FUN!!! It is RELAXING!!! There is NO PRESSURE!!! They NEVER talk about SCHOOL!!!
Having a Big Sister for my son is one of the few things that he can have as his own, not having to share with a sibling or siblings.
The TRUST is there, the HONESTY is there, the INTERESTS are there. And, possibly most importantly he has ganied a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP on which he can reflect for the rest of his life.
I thank Big Brothers and Big Sisters program for helping my son in more ways than I can put onto paper.
If you are waiting for a Big Brother and a Big Sister becomes available, I STRONGLY recommend utilizing the program for the reasons it is there. Girls and boys can have the same interests!
I would like to thank the Big Brothers and Big Sisters program for each and everything they have done for my children, my family and all those who benefit from the program. Please keep up the good work!
An In-School Mentor Talks about the Benefits...
The student I visit on an In-School basis is quite quiet and often not a lot of words are exchanged. Nonetheless, we share the hour and I share whatever things for us to do that I think my Little would enjoy and might open her to new development of her talents. I want my visits with my Little to speak loudly, "You are worth my time. I believe in you! Anything you set your mind to is possible! I am proud of you!"
I encourage more people to give that hour to In-School Mentoring. It makes a Big difference, opens a new door of growth for yourself. It will cost you a bit of time and thought, but, it also opens up a new positive contact for someone who could really use the encouragement and the time of someone exactly like YOU!

Where should I begin? Thank you hardly seems to scratch the surface for how grateful we are to you.
Each and every Tuesday, Zachary comes home from school full of stories about the time he spends with you. He is always so animated as he shares his tales.
Your time with Zachary is so special to him and to us. Only because you are so generous with your time, is Zachary lucky enough to have gotten to know you. Your volunteer mentoring is a wonderful gift to share with children.
