Founded in 1994 through the merger of Aunts at Large, Big Sisters of Calgary and Uncles at Large, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area is an incorporated non-profit society and registered charitable organization. Prior to our merger, our predecessor groups were providing mentoring services in Calgary since the 1970’s.
As a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, our mission is to impact the lives of young people and volunteers through the power of mentoring. We match caring adult mentors with young people in the community who would benefit from a caring one-to-one relationship. Volunteer mentors are thoroughly screened, matched and trained to ensure the safety of the young people and the success of the match. Professional staff monitor the entire process and provide ongoing support to the volunteers, families, young people.
More than 100,000 hours of volunteer service are provided to us each year by Big Sisters, Big Brothers, Big Couples, Club Mentors, Recreation Mentors, Between Generation Mentors, In-School Mentors, mPower Mentors, Teen Mentors, Board members and other support volunteers. Our volunteer Board of Directors is made up of representatives from the community, Canadian Progress Clubs of Calgary and a Big Sister/Big Brother representative.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a donor supported volunteer-driven organization recognized for our mentoring programs for children and youth in schools and communities throughout Calgary, Airdrie, High River, Cochrane and surrounding areas.
