In 1971, The Calgary Downtown Progress Club followed the lead of the Edmonton Progress Club and organized the Uncles at Large program in Calgary. The Calgary Family Service Bureau agreed to provide the qualified staff if we would fund the program. The budget that first year was $3,500.
Over time, the program grew and the Progress Club took over full-time administration of Uncles at Large. A similar Aunts At Large program was initiated and administered by the ladies' Progress Clubs.
In 1994, both programs joined forces with the Big Brothers organization to become Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary.
Canadian Progress Clubs continue to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area. BBBS receives 40% of our revenue from the funding of Canadian Progress Clubs. In addition to founding and funding the programs, the Progress Clubs are also involved in the administration of programs through their strong representation on the agencies' Board of Directors, sub-committees and with our programs.
