What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a relationship between a caring individual and a young person that provides support, friendship and guidance over time.

How does mentoring make a difference?
Mentorship positively impacts the lives of children and youth by improving their self-esteem, relationships with others, value of education and hope for the future. We currently have young people and entire schools who are waiting for mentors.

What Is A Mentor?
Think back to when you were growing up. Was there someone, other than your parents - maybe a neighbour, a family friend, an aunt or uncle, a coach - who shared time with you and made you feel special?  When you become a mentor, you can do the same for a young person.

Volunteer applicants go through a screening, interview, child welfare check, police check, training and regular professional monitoring to ensure they are a safe and appropriate mentor.

Who are Big Brothers and Big Sisters?
Big Brother and Big Sister mentors are caring individuals who volunteer their time because they want to make a lasting difference in the life of a young person. Bigs come from a variety of backgrounds including students, professionals, tradespeople, homemakers and retirees.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters are not:

  • Youth workers
  • Substitutes for parents or teachers
  • Providers of basic necessities like food and money
